Access guide: Boat of Garten
Boat of Garten is a small highland village, a few miles North East of Aviemore, just off the A95.
Originally a ferry point over the river Spey, the village grew up when the railway arrived, as 'Boat' was an important junction on the Highland Main line of the time, where one line served the Spey.Valley and many of the whisky towns and distilleries, the other ran North to Forres and Inverness.
In recent years the village has become known as the Osprey village because of the nesting site at nearby Loch Garten.
The main 'B' road through the village is paved on both sides and there are a number of drop kerbs along the length of the road. There are no traffic lights nor pedestrian crossings.
The village supports three cafes, a hotel, numerous guest houses and a lot of self catering accommodation. There is a well loved golf course and tennis club. The heritage railway station has steam trains throughout the summer linking to Broomhill to the North and Aviemore to the South.
Nearby attractions include the RSBP Loch Garten Nature Reserve, fishing on the Spey (with permit), and walks round Milton Loch. The Community Hall is magnificent and runs numerous events throughout the year. There is a newly built pump track in the woods adjacent to the community hall for the more energetic among us.
Services 37 and X37 serve the village with an approximately hourly service linking to Aviemore to the South and Nethy Bridge, Grantown, Carrbridge and Inverness to the North.
