Access guide: Aviemore
The village of Aviemore is the largest in the Cairngorms National Park, and acts as the main hub for visitors. There is a thriving commercial centre with numerous hotels, guest houses, restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. The village is very welcoming to visitors and popular for all kinds of activities.
The A9 trunk road by passes the village, with slip roads for access to Aviemore at both North and South ends of the village.
The main thoroughfare through Aviemore, Grampian Road, runs North to South for approximately a mile and a half, with numerous satellite locations off. At the Southern end of the village, the 'ski road' leads through the hamlets of Rothiemurchus, Coylumbridge and Glenmore to the Cairngorm mountain ski area.
The main road has pavements both sides and drop kerbs are provided at nearly all crossing points. There are 5 traffic light assisted crossings on the main road all with tactile footings and audible signals.
The village is well served by public transport.
There is a mainline rail station in the centre of the village with regular services to and from Inverness to the North, and Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow to the South. One train daily in each direction connects directly with London Kings Cross. Wheelchair access is sometimes problematic here as there is no lift or other convenient wheeled access between platforms. Wheelchair users are recommended to book assistance if using the mainline station.
A frequent service of express coaches connects Aviemore with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness, departing from a stance near the rail station on Grampian Road.
Local buses for Badenoch and Strathspey and beyond , serve bus stops throughout Aviemore, routes 37, X37, 39, M39, 30.
Both local buses and intercity coach services carry wheelchairs, booking is recommended for intercity services.
Further local transport options exist using the local Community Transport Company (Community Connexions), or several local taxi operators. There is a taxi rank at the rail station on Grampian Road.
Leisure facilities in Aviemore are plentiful. There are 3 hotel swimming pools, a number of gyms and other sporting outlets that include a golf course, tennis, water sports, snowsports, hiking, climbing, mountain biking and more. There is a community run ice rink near the town centre.
There is a hospital and health centre, and two dental centres.
The police station in the town centre is still manned at times.
